AFCON U17: Uganda Cubs Coach Happy With Performance Despite Loss In Opener

The Uganda Cubs suffered an opening defeat in their first ever Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations as they went down 1-0 to Angola in Tanzania on Sunday at the National stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Osvaldo Capemba picked a quickly-taken corner kick in the 32nd minute, advanced into Uganda’s box from the left and bolted in a scorching shot for the lone winner.

Uganda made three changes in the second half Jinja SSS duo of Isma Mugulusi and Edrine Opaala, the former had the closest chance but his clever effort bounced on the bar.

Uganda was later reduced to ten men with about ten minutes remaining when Ibrahim Juma was handed a second booking.

Despite the loss, the team’s head coach, Paa Kwesi, is satisfied with the performance and hopes to improve in the second game that will be against Nigeria on Wednesday.

“They are a good team that plays with a lot of power,” Kwesi said of the Angolans.

He added: “We tried to use our game plan; we did it but faced a lot of problems in their half because of fitness. But, we were brave and I congratulate my boys for that. We shall try to improve our level in the next match but for this one, I am happy with the performance.”

Nigeria lead group A with three points after beating Tanzania 5-4 in a thrilling opener.
