The Inspector General of Police, Mr Okoth Martins Ochola has warned his officers to desist from the politics of the country and focus on serving the public.
Mr Ochola cautioned his men not to engage in acts, especially torture of civilians with justification for belonging to certain political groups.
According to the police boss, “ One time, it went viral when police officers in Kajansi were torturing some people for being members of people power, is it an offense to belong to people power ! Under what section of the penal code?” he wondered.
He urged his officers not to allow persons he referred to as “Lumpens” deviate them from their duties.
“You cannot allow lumpens to take advantage, that must stop,” he said.
Mr Ochola made the remarks at Bwebajja based senior police command school on Monday where he addressed all police directors, RPCs and other senior officers.
He urged his men to work together to rebuild the image of the police institution and its functional systems.
The police chief also told regional police commanders to always observe and respect the chain of command so that the institution operates in an organised manner.
“There must be a streamlined procedure of giving and receiving lawful orders and instructions,” the IGP said.
He however said that the force shall jointly forge a uniform path and strategic guidelines in the policing activities.
He revealed that the major focus now is to rebuild and transform the police into a modern, professional, service oriented, pro-people and effective institution.
